I am directed by Mr. Secretary Churchill to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 21st of September, re- garding the hui tsai custom in Hong Kong, and to inform you that a despatch has been received from the Governor relating to the

cases you mentioned in your letter of the

12th of November, 1920.

2. The purport of the Governor's

report on the cases as numbered in your

letter of last November was as follows:-

Case No. 1.

It is considered probable that

your reference was to a case brought before

the lagistrate on the 16th of July, 1920,

and not the 16th of June as stated in your

letter of the 12th of November, 1920, no

such case being recorded on that date, (Mr. Churchill observed that you now write of

this case as having been brought before the

Magistrate on the 15th of July, 1920). The employer was found guilty and fined $500; the girls were sent to the Po Leung Kuk on the 3rd of August, They were not returned'

to the employer.
